Magnetic wire rope tests

In the past twenty years of the laboratory's activity, the laboratory carried out more than 3000 magnetic induction tests to assess the integrity of ropes of ropeway installations and  the occurrence of external or internal broken wires or corrosion, mechanical damage or damage due to flash of lightning.

Seen that third party companies are entitled  to carry out the running inspection of ropeway installations, LA.T.I.F. has been entrusted the responsibility of a verifier of the equipment used by these companies and of an agreement body mandated to carry out the approval tests laid down by the competent service of the Ministry for Transports.
To this end the laboratory has taken the necessary steps to adapt the own verification equipment to the new requirements and has prepared special standard reference ropes with known defects. It has thus the possibility to compare the precision of the tested equipment with the laboratory's own  reference equipment and thus the possibility to assess the acceptability and precision of the testing equipment for ropeway installations intended to carry persons.

The laboratory's own test machines can handle ropes up to 90 mm in diameter. Digital recording of the test program and PC acquisition facilitate the comparison with plotted charts.

Conclusions drawn from the analysis of the recordings made during the life of the rope and the visual inspection are fundamental for the decision to maintain the rope in service, or else,  to discard it.

For the laboratory's in-house use permanent magnet detectors are at present being built with newly developed magnetic materials that meet the requirements for maximum efficiency and minimum weight.
