Steel wire tests

Regulations for steel wire ropes for public ropeway systems require ropes to be tested for  acceptance prior to their installation.

LA.T.I.F. is one of the two approved Italian test houses which the Italian Ministry for Transports has authorized to carry out acceptance tests.  Under the specific ministerial decree straightened steel wires of ropes presented for acceptance have to pass tensile, torsion and alternate bending tests and  the standard breaking load test which is carried out on rope sections.

Test specimens for the standard breaking load test have to be fitted with special made to purpose poured conical end sockets made of terne metal or special resin which is poured into a mould and heated up to 450ºC.
Test specimens are deemed to pass if all test results are within the range of values specified in the ministerial decree.

The laboratory's outfit of testing machines for acceptance tests consists of a 100 t horizontal hydraulic machine, a standard vertical 50 t hydraulic machine, two, a 200 kN and a 50 kN,  computerized vertical electromechanical machines for the alternate bending test of wires, wire straightening machine etc.
The new horizontal 1000 t testing machine  is used for determinations of the breaking load of test specimens weighing up to 1000 t and having a diameter greater than 100 mm.
